Shortly after that we had a fairly snorting signal from the C-in-C which said, roughly speaking, ‘if nobody keeps their eye on the Scharnhorst, how the hell do you think I’m going to bring her to action?’ or words to that effect. It was a terrible thing. Poor old Bob, he was a terribly emotional chap, he was jolly nearly in tears about it. I was able to reassure him. And afterwards of course his judgement was proved utterly correct because the Scharnhorst turned up again to look for the convoy and ran straight into us. There is no question in my mind that Bob was right, absolutely right.
